HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ACCOUNTS (HRA)


What is an HRA? 💰

A Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) is an employer-funded benefit that helps cover eligible medical expenses for you and your covered dependents under the ICUBA medical plan. Unlike an HSA, you don’t contribute to an HRA - it’s entirely employer-funded. Some member schools fund HRAs, but not all do. Check with your HR or Benefits Department if you’re unsure about your eligibility.


HRA funds are available either monthly or annually, depending on your employer’s setup. If funded monthly, contributions typically post around the 25th of each month, starting after your second month of medical plan enrollment. If funded annually, the amount is prorated based on your enrollment date and made available upfront. Not all employers provide an HRA for employees enrolled in ICUBA medical plans. If you are unsure if your school offers an HRA, contact your Human Resources or Benefits Department directly.


One of the key benefits of ICUBA’s HRA is vesting: if you remain enrolled in an ICUBA medical plan for 36 consecutive months and later separate from employment, you retain access to any remaining HRA funds. These vested funds can continue to be used for qualified medical expenses, subject to a $10.60 monthly administration fee, but cannot be cashed out or transferred.


Unlike Flexible Spending funds, HRA funds cannot be used to pay for expenses for dependents who are not covered under your ICUBA medical plan. If you have both an HRA and HCFSA, HCFSA funds are used first when swiping your ICUBA Benefits MasterCard. To use HRA first, you will need to submit a manual claim with Ameriflex. If you use personal funds for an eligible HRA expense, you can submit a claim for reimbursement through Ameriflex, and receive funds by check or direct deposit.
