It is important to get started as soon as possible. You must apply for portability or request conversion within 31 days after the date your group life insurance ends. If you miss the 31 day deadline, you and your dependent(s) will not be able to port or convert your coverage.

Symetra Group Life Insurance Portability

Your group life insurance coverage, provided by Symetra Life Insurance Company, includes a provision called portability. This allows you to continue your coverage when you leave your job. And, you don’t have to answer any medical questions.

Eligibility

You are eligible for portability coverage as long as:

  • Your company’s group life insurance policy, and the portability provision, is in-force at the time of application.

  • You haven’t reached Social Security Normal Retirement Age (SSNRA).

  • You’re not entering active military service.

How portability works

You can choose to continue 50%, 75% or 100% of your current life insurance benefit amount. Be sure to carefully consider all of your life insurance needs—if you decide to port a reduced percentage of your current life insurance benefit amount, you won’t be able to continue any portion of the remaining amount at a later date.

Portability may also be available for your spouse and dependents. If this provision is included in your company’s policy, you can select portability coverage as long as they are insured under the current group life policy at the time your group coverage terminates. Child coverage may only be ported if you or your spouse elects portability.

For more information and assistance completing your portability application, contact your Human Resources or Benefits Department.

Symetra Group Life Insurance Conversion

Life Conversion allows you to easily convert your Symetra Group Life Insurance Policy to an individual life insurance policy offered through HRMP and insured by Gerber Life Insurance Company. If you also have coverage for your dependents, that coverage may also be continued under the Conversion provision.

Converting your Symetra Group Life Insurance policy lets you maintain your current level of life insurance coverage without having to answer additional health questions or go through any type of medical exam.

You are able to convert your or your dependent’s group life coverage to an individual life policy if your coverage under the group policy ends for any reason including, but not limited to:

  • Your employment terminated

  • Your death, which may cause your spouse or dependent children to lose coverage

  • Your divorce from your dependent spouse

  • Your coverage is reduced due to age

  • Your dependent reaching a limiting age

However, if your coverage under Symetra’s Group Life Insurance Policy ends because:

  • the policy is terminated; or

  • your coverage terminated because coverage for your entire class is terminated

then conversion is only allowed if you have been insured under the Symetra Group Life Insurance policy for five years or more. In this situation, the amount which you may convert would be limited to the lesser of:

  • $10,000;

  • or the amount of your group life coverage that ended minus any amount of group life insurance coverage that you became eligible for within 31 days of termination of the group life policy.

For more information and assistance completing your conversion application, contact your Human Resources or Benefits Department.
