Important Update:

Change in GLP-1 Coverage for Weight Loss Effective October 1, 2025

This post is to inform ICUBA members of an upcoming change to ICUBA’s prescription drug coverage that may affect you or a covered family member. Individual members impacted by this change will receive communication via US Mail from ICUBA and Optum Rx directly.

Effective October 1, 2025, GLP-1 medications used for weight loss will no longer be covered under the ICUBA medical and pharmacy benefit plans. This change applies to all members using GLP-1 medications (such as Wegovy, Saxenda, and others) for weight management, including members with Type 1 diabetes who have been prescribed GLP-1 medications for weight loss. GLP-1 medications are not FDA approved for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes, primarily due to the risks associated with hypoglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis when used with insulin.

If you are prescribed a GLP-1 medication to treat Type 2 diabetes, this change does not apply to you. Coverage for GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Trulicity, and others will continue to be prescribed for the management of Type 2 diabetes.

This decision was made by ICUBA's Board of Directors (representatives from ICUBA member schools) after careful evaluation of clinical guidelines, cost-effectiveness, and the long-term sustainability of benefits for all ICUBA members. ICUBA remains committed to supporting your health and wellbeing and offers a broad range of resources and programs to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you are currently using GLP-1 medication for weight loss, we encourage you to speak with your healthcare provider about alternative treatment options and weight loss solutions.

ICUBA members still have access to a wide range of weight management resources, including programs from Virta Health and My Health Novel. Plus, our ICUBAcares Pharmacist Advocate team is here to support you by exploring alternative weight management options, including GLP‑1 savings programs. If you’d like help or want to learn more, give ICUBAcares a call at (877) 286‑3967, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership in managing your health.

Sincerely,

The ICUBA Benefits Team
